Bulldog Health Information

Bulldogs on average are healthy dogs. Bulldogs, just like all other breeds, do have health issues. Here at Emsley's we breed for health and temperament above all else. We plan our breeding's and try to put the healthiest and best tempered dogs, with the best bloodlines as possible. This doesn't mean that there will never be an health issue but we do our best to avoid as many health issues as possible.Below you will find some of the non-threatening health issues that Bulldogs can get. These health issues are not covered in our health contract due to the fact that they can be Hereditary or they can be caused by other factors.

Mange

Is a mite that effects the pup either from the mother or due to stress. Stress is usually the main cause of mange due to the fact that older Bulldogs have gotten mange as well and they are not still nursing from their mothers. Mange can easily be taken care of with Medication from your Vet. I personally have only had one pup get Mange. Breeders such as myself will never breed a female or male that has had Mange. The Mange could be stress related but just in case it was hereditary a bulldog with Mange should never be bred.

Entropian

Is when the eyelashes turn inwards and scratch the eye. Entropian can be hereditary but it is usually caused by a Bulldog puppy that has alot of wrinkles. These wrinkles are so heavy that they cause the eyelashes to turn inwards. Due to the fact that it can be hereditary breeders such as myself will not breed a dog that has had Entropian. Entropian does require surgery. I personally have only had one puppy that got Entropian and she was just covered in wrinkles.

Cherry Eye

Is when the gland under the third eyelid pops out. It looks like a little cherry in the corner of the eye. Most Vets remove this gland. It can be just cut off but it could cause dry eye. Dry eye however can be a problem in Bulldogs so some Vets will cut it off instead of surgery.

Hip Dysplasia

It can be hereditary but in most causes Bulldogs are allowed to jump down off of beds couches, and in and out of trucks. This is not good for a Bulldog, the weight of a Bulldog and the short legs on a Bulldog the hips can't take that kind of  pressure. Therefore i do not cover hip Dysplasia in my health contract.

Misc

There are other minor health conditions that can happen in Bulldogs such as ear infections and skin infections. Also some Bulldogs have shorter tails that could cause some problems. Most tail problems just result in the owner having to clean under there tail.

Any major health problems that would cause serious illness or death in your Bulldog are covered in our Health Contract. We at Emsley's do suggest that all Bulldog owners should have pet insurance - if any Health issues do arise most of the cost is paid for.
